 OTTAWA – Northern Ontario should not be short-changed when the Harper government changes the riding boundaries in Ontario to suit their electoral needs, according to Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle.

Gravelle kept the promise made Monday by the six NDP MPs during their barnstorming tour of the north, introducing a bill to protect Northern Ontario’s 10 federal ridings.

NDP MPs launch tour to preserve Northern Ontario’s share of federal electoral ridings

 OTTAWA – New Democrat MPs from Northern Ontario are launching a three-stop tour to pressure Stephen Harper to preserve fair representation for Northern Ontario families by protecting the regions 10 seats in the House of Commons.

MPs from all parties stood to applaud and honour Vale Miner Stephen Perry today following Claude Gravelle’s statement in the House of Commons prior to Question Period today. Here is the statement:

Mr. Speaker,

Communities in the region Nickel Belt and Sudbury are mourning the tragic death of Vale miner Stephen Perry

 Mr. Perry was a development miner working in the main ore body at the 4200 level of the Coleman mine when he was killed on Sunday.

 He has been described as generous, skilled, experienced and highly respected by his colleagues.

 After learning of the sudden and tragic death of the miner Stephen Perry, yesterday, NDP MPs Claude Gravelle and Glenn Thibeault wanted to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who had worked for Vale in Sudbury for 16 years.

 “As a former employee of a mining company I know firsthand how dangerous it is to work underground. At the end of the day all a miner wants to do is earn a good living and go home to his family. My heart goes out to his family and his co-workers,” said Gravelle.
