Ottawa, ON – Today, on the eve of Quebec’s Fête Nationale, Nickel Belt MP, Claude Gravelle re-tabled his legislation that would make St. Jean the Baptist Day, a national holiday.

“I am honoured to table this bill. As a Franco-Ontarian, my family and I have always celebrated this important holiday,” said Gravelle. “French Canadians from across the country have also expressed support for this important holiday.”

Ottawa, ON – Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle today paid tribute to the fallen miners in the House of Commons.

Gravelle and his NDP caucus colleagues also expressed sorrow and solidarity with miners by wearing two Steel Worker shovel pins sideways to signify the death of two miners.

Gravelle’s statement:

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to pay tribute to two miners who lost their lives last week in an accident at the Stobie Mine in Sudbury.

OTTAWA – New Democrats today expressed deep sorrow at the news that two miners lost their lives in an accident at the Stobie Mine in Sudbury, ON.

“I was terribly saddened this morning to hear of the accident at Stobie Mine that resulted in the death of two mine workers,” said NDP Leader Jack Layton. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of the danger mine workers, and many industrial workers, put themselves in every day. We can only hope that the investigation into this accident makes other workers safer in the future.”

OTTAWA–New Democrat FedNor Critic Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt) tabled legislation today to give Northern Ontarians their own independent economic development agency.

“It is no accident that my first act in this Parliament is to table legislation that gives Northern Ontario its own independent economic development agency,” said Gravelle. “FedNor is now couched in Industry Canada and has less accountability than any other economic development agencies.”

Mr. Speaker, tax cuts for major corporations do not create jobs in the north. FedNor is a real economic driver in northern Ontario, and it would not cost anything to make this agency independent and protected from ministerial interference.

When will the minister make FedNor independent, like the other development agencies in Canada?
